Most fighting systems teach an aggressive stance (i.e., boxing stance). Stances are great when you are in the ring and getting ready for a match. Regarding street tactics, taking a "boxing/self-defense stance" means something has compelled you to "get ready for the match." Usually, a punch has been thrown or some other type of physical assault. The real question is, what happened before taking that fighting stance? I call the void in training. Many systems (traditionally) prepare you for a match, but few instructors deal with training that prepares the defender to deal with the confrontation before the first swing or shove.
Maintaining the role of a victim may be the deciding factor whether the "District Attorney's Office" (or responding law enforcement) files criminal charges against the self-defense practitioner for injury to the other party. Though combat-related training can be helpful in combat situations, "the take no prisoners" mentality could cost you time behind bars and expose you to civil liabilities.
Training clients who work in high-risk jobs: Real-life engagements outside the classroom. Tactical training for rapid skill development and longer retention. Clients engagement stats:
X3 - Handgun Defense Encounters: Successfully Resolved
X3 - Edged Weapon Defense Encounters: Successfully Resolved
Multiple - Empty Hand Self-Defense Encounters by civilians, security, and those working in law enforcement: Successfully Resolved
Self-defense is just that – "Self defense." The training clients to address confrontations at all levels. Learning to seek a means of resolving the conflict while maintaining the skills to defend oneself and escape is the goal - Not destruction. Injury to an aggressor occurs because of the aggressor's action, not yours. Clients learn to do just enough to resolve the confrontation, defend themselves, and escape the immediate danger.
Witnesses: Your performance and actions have consequences. In determining who the victims are, first law enforcement and the district attorney's office will surely obtain a statement from witnesses. Your role as a victim is to make it known to the witnesses that you are not a willing participant. Your words and posture define your role as a victim or aggressor before a physical engagement. The follow-up action after a physical commitment is also crucial in your role as a victim (i.e., Beating an unconscious man, pursuing a retreating aggressor for "pay-back").
